The trapeziometacarpal joint is important for thumb movement and function. Pain and swelling at the base of the thumb caused by arthritis can impact the entire hand. There is no ideal treatment option for this pattern of arthritis but my research shows that resection arthroplasty of the distal 4mm of the trapezium produces the strongest result when compared to excision arthroplasty or interposition arthroplasty. This video was created to explain what trapeziometacarpal joint arthritis is, the causes, the symptoms, the different treatment options available and the outcome of surgical and non-surgical management.
